George “Judd” Swaney, Uniontown, Pa.
George “Judd” Swaney, 93 of Uniontown, Pa. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 28, 1926 in York Run, Pa., son of the late George W. and Stella Belle Ellsworth Swaney.
In addition to his parents, Judd was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Crawford Swaney in 1957, his wife of 50 years, Mary Louise Walters Swaney in 2009; his daughter, Sharon Miller; his sons-in-law, Bill Casebeer and Vince Wirbicki; sisters, Ethel Swaney, Ruth Zaydel, Hannah Show and brother, Carl Swaney. Also predeceasing him in 2016 was Shirley Tucker, who was his treasured companion.
A graduate of South Union High School Class of 1944, Judd joined the US Army, serving in the Armored Division during World War II, as part of the Rhineland Campaign in Europe. Following his military service, Judd was an expert carpet installer until his retirement in 1990.
Judd was a member of the Brownfield United Methodist Church, where he was fondly referred to as Uncle Judd by the entire congregation.
Judd’s passions were his family, sports and gardening. He was very proud of his 4 daughters, his son, and all of his grandchildren. He loved spending time with family, whether having picnics and competitive volleyball games or going to their various sporting events, especially baseball.
Judd was a very good baseball player and was inducted into the Fayette County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. He was known for his “good looks”, charm, sense of humor and quick wit and was often referred to as “Pap Pap” by family and friends.
Surviving are his children; daughters, Jackie Wirbicki and Jill Molton (Terry Janosek) of Uniontown, Pa., Jan Casebeer of Santa Rosa, CA, son, Mark (Jackie) Uhazie, Lincoln, Michigan; son-in-law, Darwin Miller of Smithfield, Pa.; a brother, Ray (Carol) Swaney of Hopwood, Pa.; grandchildren, Jill (Doug) Hillard, Jeff (Bobbi Jo) Miller, Jody (Rod) Miller, Shaun Lucy, Drew (Brandi) Lucy, Samantha (Mercedes) Molton, Derek (Erica) Casebeer, Mark (Adrienne) Casebeer and Shelly (Robert) Hubenette and numerous great grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews including Jim and Carl Dice, whom he regarded as his sons.
Judd’s family would like to extend their appreciation for the excellent assistance and support he received from his caregivers: Rhonda, Margie, Georgia, Sheree, Barb and Rhea, who became like family to him and to the staff of Amedisys Hospice.
The family will greet friends and family in the Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Diane Olson officiating.
