John A. Kopas Jr.

     John A. Kopas, Jr. of Fairchance, Pa. passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019. 

     His parents John A. Kopas Sr. and Bertha J. (Labutta) Kopas of Shadyside, PA preceded him in death. 

     John was a loving husband, father, and devoted grandfather.  He was married for 55 years to and is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann (Hoferka) Kopas of Fairchance; three loving sons, John A. Kopas III and wife Jennifer of Uniontown,  Jeffrey A. Kopas and wife Cindy of Fairchance, and James A. Kopas and spouse David of Devon, PA;  five loving grandchildren Jeffrey A. Kopas, Jr., Patrick C. Kopas, and Elise P. Kopas of Fairchance;  Wesley B. Kopas of Charlotte, NC., and Jackson G. Kopas of Uniontown.  He is also survived by siblings, Carole Migyanko and husband John, Dianne Covato and husband Tony, and Michael Kopas and wife Cindy, all of Uniontown and his only surviving aunt, Catherine J. (Kopas) Sampey of Fairchance.  In addition to his family, John leaves behind several close friends including Joe Giachetti and Rick Davison. 

John was a graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in Economics.  He played baseball for the Mountaineers during his tenure there.  He initially worked in finance before changing careers to become a coal miner.  He retired from the coal mines after 25 years of service.  He was very loyal to his alma mater and thoroughly enjoyed watching their football and basketball games.  He rarely missed a WVU home football game and always looked forward to attending them with his family.   He loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman enjoying both hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, other family and friends.  In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and gardening, both of which allowed him to share his passion with others.  John never missed an opportunity to make someone smile with his quick wit and personal opinions. 

A private service was held at Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home with interment at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Fairchance on February 21, 2019.
