Retha Miller Jordan

Retha Miller Jordan, 92, daughter of Arch and Leona Miller of Hopwood, Pennsylvania passed away on May 29, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Laurel, Maryland.

She is survived by six children, Wm. Bruce (Masontown, PA), Pamela Anderson (Michael of Laurel, MD), Peggy Lamborne (Richard of Wilmington, NC), Douglas Archie (Winchester, VA), Robert Daniel (Martinsburg, WV) and Jennifer Yost (Kevin of Gore, VA); 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Retha graduated from North Union High School, Uniontown, PA and Duff’s Business Institute, Pittsburgh, PA after which she spent the majority of her life working as an executive secretary at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD and Pennsylvania Glass Sand in Berkley Springs, WV until her retirement when she began working with the elderly in the health care field in local nursing homes. She had quite a reputation as the 'Cookie Lady', as she made cookies for them every week for several years. She also sang with the residents and was very much loved by them. Retha spent much of her free time over the years doing what she loved most, singing with the Sweet Adelines and Barber Shop Quartets.

She was known as the Queen of Hopwood because of her love of her hometown, where she was very active in the Hopwood community. Retha was passionate about the National Pike Days Wagon Train and instrumental in placing the banners on the Wagon Train Lookout Building.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2018 from noon until 2:00 p.m. in the Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, PA. The funeral service begins at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Charlie O’Brien officiating.   Private interment to follow the morning of Monday, June 4, 2018 at Mountain View Memorial Park, Brownfield, PA.
