Gilbert Craig Byington
February 11, 1936 – August 15, 2023
Gilbert Craig Byington (87) peacefully returned to God early Tuesday morning at the Uniontown General Hospital. He was born in Bowie, Maryland and was married to Elaine (Blystone) Byington.
He retired from the Washington Gas Light Company after 30 years. He also worked at the A&P Grocery Store in New Carrollton Maryland. Gilbert was a School Bus Driver for Smithfield Schools and also worked at the Steel Mill and had his own Auto Parts business for several years.
He was the youngest child of Paul J. Byington and Thelma Ina (Craig) Byington of Spartanburg, South Carolina. His siblings include, Ray Edward Byington (Jere), Paul Leon (deceased), Arthur Fillmore (deceased).
Gilbert was gifted with five children. Stephen Craig Byington (Karen) of Kentucky, Susan Miller (Wayne) of North Carolina, David Byington (Terry) of Florida, Dawn Byington (Linda) of Florida, Denise Swenglish (Matt) of Pennsylvania, and a stepson, Anthony Kisco (Tammy) of Pennsylvania.
In his lifetime, he loved nine grand children across the country and many great grand children, and many beloved nieces and nephews. For many years, he loved history and diving into family genealogy. He also was an active member/volunteer of the Centennial Reenactments of the Civil War as a Confederate soldier, making his own uniforms and gear to be historically accurate from 1960 through 1965. He carried that enthusiasm into his research of his own family ancestry.
Gil had a great sense of humor and always had a smile that would light up any room.
His love for God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, leaves no doubt on where his eternal rest lies.
The funeral service will be held at Dean Whitmarsh Funeral Home, Fairchance, PA on Friday, August 18th, 2023. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Frank Todaro officiating with a graveside service/interment afterwards.
