Karen J. Hlatky, Smithfield, Pa.

     Karen J. Hlatky, 67 of Smithfield, Pa. passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Ruby Memorial Hospital with her loving family and her husband of 43 years, Samuel Thomas Hlatky by her side.

     She was born March 30, 1956 in Uniontown, Pa.

     She was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Cosa Mae Dodson Huey and four brothers, Joseph, Ernie, Archie and George.

     Surviving are her son, Samuel Hlatky, Smithfield, Pa.; stepson, Andy Hlatky, Jr. (Hope) of Brownsville, Pa.; stepdaughter, Christine (Ronnie) Vanek of Brownsville, Pa.; granddaughter, Skylar Hlatky; grandson, Kyler Hlatky; step grandchildren, Cameron and Bentley; brothers, Paul (Joyce) of Mapletown, Pa., Doug (Mary) of Uniontown, Pa., Ronnie (Charla) of Smithfield, Pa., Randy (Donna) of Smithfield, Pa. and Billy (Annie) of Smithfield, Pa.; sisters, Marcy (Mike) Morrell of Smithfield, Pa. and Cecilia (Dave) Davis of Smithfield, Pa.; sister-in-law, Jacalyn Huey of Smithfield, Pa. and close friend and cousin, Norma Hlatky of Smithfield, Pa.

    Karen was born with a rare condition called Trilogy of Fallot, she was known as the Blue Baby. When Karen was ten years old, she was one of the first children to undergo open heart surgery at Childrens Hospital Pittsburgh. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she stated a normal child. Karen beat the odds against her and was a loving, kind and caring person. She relied on her Christian faith to help guide her through her daily struggles.

     The family will receive friends in the Dean C. Whitmarsh Funeral Home, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Stephanie Thorpe officiating. Interment following in Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield, Pa.
