Melvin “Harry” Smith
February 28, 1931 – September 26, 2025
Melvin “Harry” Smith, of Fairchance, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2025, at the age of 94. He was the son of Russel Smith and Kathleen Wilson.
Born on February 28, 1931, in Smithfield, Harry proudly served in the United States Army, spending four years in active duty during the Korean War. A dedicated member of his community, he was a familiar and trusted presence at the Fairchance Volunteer Fire Department, where he was an active firefighter and fire police. He devoted countless hours helping with events and supporting his neighbors. He also retired at the age of 64 from Klondike Concrete as a truck driver.
Harry was a loving husband and father, a proud veteran, and a man of great integrity. He deeply loved his wife and family and made sure they – and everyone around him – felt cared for and supported. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet wisdom, and deep compassion. Harry never let anyone go home hungry; his door was always open for those in need. His life was a reflection of loyalty and selflessness.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Nellie Franks, Pat Faith; his brothers Jim Smith, Fred Smith, Russel Smith, Bill Smith, Paul Smith; his son Dave Smith; and grandson Donnie Phillips.
Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife Maxine Smith of 63 years. He is survived by his sister Queen Cain; children Dale (Diane) Smith, Darlene (Don) Phillips, his daughter-in-law Veronica Smith; and his beloved grandchildren Brittany (Joe) Toler, Matthew (Brianna) Smith, Holly (Tom) Beck, Haley Smith and Jeremy Gastor, John (Brittany) Phillips, Emilie Phillips and Alex Stoy. He also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will cherish his memory of love and quiet strength.
In honor of his wishes, there will not be a memorial service.
