Sam worked as a coal miner at Kyle and Collier mines. He was very proud of his 20 years as a miner, often telling stories of his coal mining days. At the same time, Sam started the Wood Dairy Farm with his father Charles. He was an astute farmer using the latest agronomic and dairy practices. Sam and his father had a retail dairy store on the Hopwood-Fairchance Road for more than 40 years. Sam loved to farm just as much as he loved to mine coal and for many years held the two professions simultaneously. After Sam retired from coal mining and the dairy business, he began a new occupation, selling sweet corn for his daughter and son-in-law at the corner of Morgantown Road and Brownfield Lane for many years. He loved talking to the many customers he had at the sweet corn cart telling them it was the best corn in Fayette County. Also he would ask them “Guess how old I am?” Sam also enjoyed planting many beautiful flowers with great success. He also enjoyed his many cats.
